Google Chrome: Use-after-free in Network component allows sandboxed code execution
Summary
A use-after-free flaw in the Network component of Google Chrome on Windows allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox. The attack requires the victim to visit a crafted HTML page, so user interaction is needed. The CVSS base score is 8.8 (High). Code execution is limited to the sandbox, so a full system compromise normally requires a second sandbox-escape flaw.
Affected
- Google Chrome on Windows prior to 156.0.8078.47
- Linux: HKCERT lists 156.0.8078.47 as the fixed version; Ubuntu marks its chromium-browser package as not affected
- Microsoft Edge and other Chromium-based browsers may also be affected (unverified)
Fixed in
- Google Chrome 156.0.8078.47 or later (HKCERT lists 156.0.8078.47/.48 or later for Windows)
Workaround
Unknown. No vendor-documented workaround beyond updating.
Exploitation
- No known exploitation in the wild in the research sources (secondary source; CISA KEV not checked directly)
- CISA SSVC: Exploitation none, Automatable no, Technical Impact total
- No public proof of concept found
Our recommendation
- Update Chrome on all Windows endpoints to the current Stable build and restart the browser, because updates apply only after a restart
- Verify the installed version with a browser inventory, and update Edge and other Chromium-based browsers separately
- Prioritise hosts used for administrative tasks or for browsing untrusted web content
- Confirm the version against the Chrome Releases post and the NVD record, as the sources are partly secondary
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
