Google Chrome: Memory corruption in Interstitials
Summary
Google Chrome desktop versions before 156.0.8078.47 contain a memory corruption flaw in the Interstitials component. A remote attacker can execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox by luring a user to a crafted HTML page. The attack requires that the victim visits the page, for example via a phishing link or a compromised website. Code execution limited to the sandbox does not by itself give full control of the system.
Affected
- Google Chrome desktop before 156.0.8078.47 (per NVD description)
- Other sources give conflicting version ranges; VulDB lists up to 155.0.8059.84
Fixed in
- Google Chrome 156.0.8078.47 or later
- Newer stable builds are available; deploy the latest stable release
Workaround
- None required when the update is applied. No vendor workaround documented.
Exploitation
- No exploitation in the wild reported.
- No public proof of concept found.
- Not listed in CISA KEV at the time of research.
Our recommendation
- Update Google Chrome on all endpoints to the latest stable version.
- Enforce a minimum version via MDM or update policy and check chrome://version.
- Check Chromium-based browsers (Edge, Brave and others) for their own fixes.
- Prioritise users with privileged accounts or who browse untrusted websites.
- Monitor the Chromium bug and CISA KEV for changes.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
