NoMachine: Local privilege escalation via named pipe permissions
Summary
NoMachine remote-desktop software contains an incorrect permission assignment on a named pipe in the NoMachine Device Service. A local attacker with low-privileged code execution on the host can exploit it to escalate privileges and execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM. The attacker must first gain a foothold on the target system; remote exploitation without that foothold is not described in the advisory.
Affected
- NoMachine (product as listed in the CVE record: 9.7.3)
- Full affected version range: Unknown. The vendor advisory is not yet confirmed.
Fixed in
- Fixed in NoMachine v10, v9 and v8 according to ZDI advisory ZDI-26-773.
- Exact fixed build numbers: Unknown. See vendor KB TR08X11946.
Workaround
- Disable the NoMachine Device Service on hosts that do not need it (third-party recommendation, not confirmed by the vendor).
- Restrict local logon on affected hosts to trusted accounts.
Exploitation
- No evidence of exploitation in the wild found. Not listed in KEV.
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.
- No public proof of concept found.
Our recommendation
- Inventory NoMachine installations and identify hosts running the Device Service.
- Check vendor KB TR08X11946 for the exact fixed build for your branch and update.
- Where updates cannot be applied immediately, disable the Device Service on hosts that do not need it.
- Review who has local logon on these hosts.
- Priority: medium to high for Windows endpoints and servers running NoMachine.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

NoMachine Named Pipe Incorrect Permission Assignment Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows local attackers to escalate privileges on affected installations of NoMachine. An attacker must first obtain the ability to execute low-privileged code on the target system in order to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within the NoMachine Device Service. The issue results from incorrect permissions on a named pipe. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to escalate privileges and execute arbitrary code in the context of SYSTEM. Was ZDI-CAN-31213.
