Cloud Commander: Path traversal via GET /api/v1/pack
Summary
Cloud Commander (cloudcmd) versions 19.20.2 through 19.21.1 contain a path traversal vulnerability in the GET /api/v1/pack endpoint. An attacker can use percent-encoded traversal sequences to read arbitrary files outside the configured --root directory, such as /etc/passwd or SSH private keys, which are returned as a downloadable tar.gz archive. The flaw only applies when --root is set to a value other than /, because with the default root / full filesystem access is by design. With the shipped default configuration (auth disabled), no credentials are required.
Affected
- Cloud Commander (cloudcmd) 19.20.2 through 19.21.1
- Only when the --root option is set to a value other than /
Fixed in
- Fixed in cloudcmd 19.21.2
Workaround
- No vendor workaround known.
- Until the update is applied, restrict network access to the instance (VPN, IP allow-list, or no public exposure).
- Enable authentication if it is disabled.
Exploitation
- No known exploitation in the wild. CISA SSVC lists exploitation as none.
- A public write-up exists; its contents were not verified.
- The attack is network-reachable and needs no user interaction.
Our recommendation
- Inventory all Cloud Commander instances, including containers and test servers.
- Upgrade to version 19.21.2 or later.
- Remove direct internet exposure and enable authentication.
- Review logs for requests to /api/v1/pack with unusual paths and check for unexpected downloads.
- If an exposed instance had access to sensitive files, rotate SSH keys and credentials.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
Cloud Commander (cloudcmd) versions 19.20.2 through 19.21.1 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the GET /api/v1/pack endpoint where the onGET handler at server/rest/index.js:130 calls the unguarded root() function instead of the root.resolve() validation wrapper used elsewhere. Attackers can send percent-encoded directory traversal sequences in the pack request path to read arbitrary files outside the configured --root directory, such as /etc/passwd or SSH private keys, which are archived and streamed back as a downloadable tar.gz file.
