Google Chrome: Use after free in ShapeDetection allows sandbox escape
Summary
A use-after-free flaw in the ShapeDetection component of Google Chrome before 155.0.8059.79 can be abused by a remote attacker. The attacker must first have compromised the renderer process and then lure a user to a crafted HTML page to execute arbitrary code outside the browser sandbox. The CVSS base score is 8.3 (High), and the vector requires user interaction and a prior renderer compromise. No exploitation or public proof of concept has been found.
Affected
- Google Chrome prior to 155.0.8059.79 on Windows, Mac and Linux
- Google Chrome for Android (155.0.8059.79 is the fixed version)
- Chromium-based browsers were not checked
- Ubuntu chromium-browser package: not affected, the Chromium snap must be refreshed
Fixed in
- Google Chrome 155.0.8059.79 (Linux, Android) and 155.0.8059.79/.80 (Windows, Mac)
- Debian: 155.0.8059.79-1~deb12u1
Workaround
- No vendor-recommended workaround known. Patching is the only remediation.
Exploitation
- No evidence of exploitation in the wild found.
- Not listed in CISA KEV at the time of research (re-check the catalogue).
- EPSS is low (about 0.3%).
- No public proof of concept found.
Our recommendation
- Update Google Chrome to 155.0.8059.79 or later on all Windows, Mac, Linux and Android devices.
- Inventory Chrome versions and flag anything below 155.0.8059.79, including Extended Stable devices.
- Verify actual build numbers after the update, since the rollout is staged.
- Enforce relaunch so the update takes effect; patch the whole batch of 37 fixes in this release.
- Monitor for exploitation indicators and re-check CISA KEV.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
