Google Chrome: Use-after-free in PDF component allows code execution
Summary
Google Chrome on Windows, macOS and Linux contains a use-after-free flaw in its PDF component. A remote attacker can use a crafted HTML page to execute arbitrary code outside the browser sandbox. The attacker needs only that the victim opens the page, and Google rates the bug Critical.
Affected
- Google Chrome prior to 155.0.8059.79 (Windows, macOS, Linux)
- The CVE record lists the affected range as "155.0.8059.79 to < 155.0.8059.79", which is inconsistent with the description.
Fixed in
- Linux: 155.0.8059.79
- Windows: 155.0.8059.79 or later
- macOS: 155.0.8059.80 or later (the vendor advisory lists .80 for Mac)
- Debian chromium (bookworm): 155.0.8059.79-1~deb12u1
- Ubuntu: chromium-browser is not affected because it installs the Chromium snap
Workaround
Unknown. The vendor documents no interim mitigation. Apply the update.
Exploitation
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total
- Not listed in CISA KEV, according to a third-party tracker (EPSS 0.21%)
- No public proof of concept found; this does not prove none exists
- The vendor advisory does not mention in-the-wild exploitation
Our recommendation
- Inventory Chrome versions on all Windows, macOS and Linux endpoints.
- Update to the current stable Chrome release (at least 155.0.8059.80 on Mac, 155.0.8059.79 on Windows and Linux).
- Enforce the update through managed policy rather than relying on users.
- Monitor CISA KEV and the Chromium issue tracker for changes in exploitation status.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
