Apache Kylin: OS command injection in Spark job handling
Summary
Apache Kylin versions 4.0.4 through 5.0.4 contain an OS command injection vulnerability (CWE-78) in the Spark job handling. According to the vendor, the main risk applies to Kylin services that are directly reachable from the public internet, while in-house deployments are mostly not affected. The vendor does not describe the exact prerequisites for exploitation, and the CVSS score of 8.8 in the input could not be verified against a primary source.
Affected
- Apache Kylin 4.0.4 through 5.0.4
- Versions 4.0.0 to 4.0.3: Unknown.
Fixed in
- Apache Kylin 5.0.5
- A fix for the 4.x branch: Unknown.
Workaround
- Remove public internet exposure of Kylin services and place them behind a VPN or firewall.
- No vendor-documented interim workaround found.
Exploitation
- No known exploitation recorded in the sources reviewed.
- Not listed in the CISA KEV catalog according to secondary sources; the catalog was not checked directly.
- No public proof-of-concept detected according to one secondary source.
Our recommendation
- Identify all Kylin instances and their exact versions, and check whether any are reachable from the internet.
- Remove public exposure first, then upgrade to 5.0.5.
- Review logs for unusual job submissions on any exposed instance running an affected version.
- Re-check NVD, the Apache advisory and CISA KEV once the official scores are published.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection') vulnerability in Apache Kylin. Impact most to the kylin services that are directly exposed to public network, which is not common. In-house kylin deployments are mostly not impacted. This issue affects Apache Kylin: from 4.0.4 through 5.0.4. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 5.0.5, which fixes the issue.
