J4Care dcm4chee-arc-light: Denial of service via infinite loop in JPEG parser
Summary
J4Care dcm4chee-arc-light, a DICOM medical image archive server, is affected by an infinite loop in its JPEGParser when it parses a specially crafted or truncated stream. An unauthenticated remote attacker can cause the service to hang, resulting in a denial of service, with no confidentiality or integrity impact according to the CVSS vector. The advisory bundle ICSMA-26-288-02 also lists more serious issues in the same release, so the whole release should be patched.
Affected
- J4Care dcm4chee-arc-light 5.35.1 (per CISA and the vendor)
- Version 5.35.0 is reported by a third-party database only and is unverified.
Fixed in
- Upgrade to dcm4chee-arc-light 5.35.2 or later (vendor recommendation).
Workaround
Unknown. No workaround is documented for this CVE; the vendor recommends upgrading.
Exploitation
- No public proof of concept confirmed at this time.
- Not listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog.
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable yes, technical impact partial.
- EPSS is low (0.00377).
Our recommendation
- Identify all dcm4chee-arc-light instances and their versions.
- Upgrade to 5.35.2 or later, which fixes the whole bundle, not only this CVE.
- Until patched, restrict DICOM and HL7 access to trusted systems and make sure the DICOM port is not reachable from the internet.
- Ask any PACS or radiology software vendor whether they embed dcm4che or dcm4chee-arc-light.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
