Google Chrome: Sandbox escape in WebAppInstalls on macOS

CVE-2026-106409High 8.3

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

Google Chrome for macOS contains an incorrect reference resolution flaw in WebAppInstalls, the component that installs web applications. A remote attacker who has already compromised the renderer process can use crafted network traffic to execute arbitrary code outside the browser sandbox. The attack requires a separate browser exploit first and user interaction, and it is considered complex to execute.

Affected

  • Google Chrome on macOS prior to 155.0.8059.39
  • Windows and Linux Chrome are not named in the CVE record

Fixed in

  • Google Chrome 155.0.8059.39 for macOS according to the Chrome Releases post of October 6, 2026
  • Later Stable builds are available; install the current Stable release
  • A third-party report names 154.0.8037.39 instead; verify the build number on the Chrome Releases page
  • Debian: 155.0.8059.39-1~deb12u1 and 155.0.8059.39-1~deb13u1
  • SUSE: chromium 155.0.8059.39-bp157.2.241.1 for SLES 15.7

Workaround

  • No workaround is required where the update is applied.
  • Ensure that Chrome auto-update works on all Mac endpoints.

Exploitation

  • Not known to be exploited in the wild; not listed in CISA KEV.
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.
  • No public proof of concept found.

Our recommendation

  • Update Google Chrome on all Mac endpoints to the current Stable release.
  • Check managed fleets and confirm that automatic updates are enabled.
  • Include the update in normal patch cycles and monitor for further Chrome security updates.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
