Google Chrome: Sandbox escape via incomplete cleanup in Dawn
Summary
Google Chrome versions before 155.0.8059.39 contain an incomplete cleanup flaw in Dawn, the WebGPU implementation used by Chrome. A remote attacker can create a crafted HTML page that may lead to arbitrary code execution outside the browser sandbox. The attack requires the user to open the malicious page, and an attacker would likely need to combine this with a second exploit to reach the sandbox boundary.
Affected
- Google Chrome desktop prior to 155.0.8059.39
- Chromium-based builds that include the affected Dawn code until they are updated
Fixed in
- Google Chrome 155.0.8059.39 (Linux) or later
- Google Chrome 155.0.8059.39/.40 (Windows and Mac) or later
- Debian 12 chromium 155.0.8059.39-1~deb12u1
- Later Chrome 155 point releases contain further fixes; use the latest stable build
Workaround
Unknown. No vendor workaround was found; apply the update.
Exploitation
- Google rates the issue Medium (Chromium security severity)
- CISA SSVC: Exploitation none, Automatable no, Technical Impact total
- Not listed as known exploited (KEV)
- No public proof of concept found; EPSS approx. 0.004
Our recommendation
- Update Chrome on all Windows, Mac and Linux endpoints to the latest stable build
- Update Chromium-based browsers such as Microsoft Edge and Linux distribution chromium packages
- Verify installed versions centrally and report endpoints still running older builds
- Restrict browsing from unmanaged devices where possible and keep content filtering active
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
