Google Chrome: Use-after-free in GarbageCollection allows code execution
Summary
A use-after-free flaw in the GarbageCollection component of Google Chrome before 155.0.8059.39 allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the sandbox. The attacker needs a victim to open a crafted HTML page, so user interaction is required. The NVD description limits the impact to code execution inside the sandbox, and a full compromise would need further steps. Chromium-based products such as Debian chromium are affected as well through their own packages.
Affected
- Google Chrome desktop builds before 155.0.8059.39
- Chromium-based packages that have not yet received the fix, e.g. Debian chromium (fixed in 155.0.8059.39-1~deb12u1)
Fixed in
- Google Chrome 155.0.8059.39 (Windows, Linux)
- Google Chrome 155.0.8059.40 (macOS)
- Debian chromium 155.0.8059.39-1~deb12u1
Workaround
Unknown. No workaround is documented; installing the update is the fix.
Exploitation
- CISA SSVC assessment: Exploitation none, Automatable no, Technical Impact total
- A secondary mirror of CISA data does not list the CVE as known exploited; the CISA KEV catalogue was not checked directly
- No public proof-of-concept found in the research
- EPSS 0.00303 (low predicted exploitation probability)
Our recommendation
- Update Google Chrome to 155.0.8059.39 or later (155.0.8059.40 on macOS) and restart the browser
- Check managed or frozen installations and update Chromium-based applications such as Microsoft Edge and Debian chromium packages
- Confirm the installed version at chrome://version, since Chrome updates roll out in phases
- Monitor for exploitation reports and limit browsing of untrusted sites on systems that are not yet patched
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
Use after free in GarbageCollection in Google Chrome prior to 155.0.8059.39 allowed a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the sandbox via a crafted HTML page. (Chromium security severity: Medium)
