Google Chrome: Uncontrolled search path element in CredentialProvider on Windows

CVE-2026-106186High 8.6

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

Google Chrome on Windows before 155.0.8059.39 contains an uncontrolled search path element (CWE-427) in the CredentialProvider component. A local attacker who can get a program onto the system may be able to execute arbitrary code outside the browser sandbox. Exploitation requires user interaction, and the attack is only possible locally.

Affected

  • Google Chrome on Windows prior to 155.0.8059.39
  • Google Chrome on Mac prior to 155.0.8059.40 (per vendor advisory; not named in CVE text)

Fixed in

  • Google Chrome 155.0.8059.39 (Windows and Linux)
  • Google Chrome 155.0.8059.40 (Mac)

Workaround

Unknown. A patched build is available, so applying the update is the fix.

Exploitation

  • No evidence of exploitation in the wild found.
  • CISA SSVC: Exploitation none, Automatable no, Technical Impact total.
  • Not in the CISA KEV catalog.
  • No public proof-of-concept code found.

Our recommendation

  • Confirm all Windows endpoints run Chrome 155.0.8059.39 or later (155.0.8059.40 on Mac).
  • Check managed deployments and long-running sessions, since browsers that never restart keep the old build loaded.
  • Limit standard users' write access to directories on the system search path.
  • Keep Chrome automatic updates enabled.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
