ZITADEL: Authentication bypass via passkey enrollment in Login V1 and V2
Summary
ZITADEL's hosted Login V1 and Login V2 UIs accept passkey or other authenticator enrollment on identify-only login sessions, before a primary factor is verified. An unauthenticated attacker who knows only a victim's login name can register an attacker-controlled authenticator and log in as that user, bypassing passwords and MFA. Applications that authenticate users through the affected hosted login UIs are exposed.
Affected
- ZITADEL 3.x before 3.4.14 (per CVE record; GitHub advisory lists 3.0.0 through 3.4.13)
- ZITADEL 4.x before 4.16.2 (per CVE record; GitHub advisory lists 4.0.0 through 4.16.1)
- Hosted Login V1 and Login V2 UIs (OIDC/SAML)
Fixed in
- 3.4.14 (3.x branch)
- 4.16.2 (4.x branch)
- Newer releases exist; check the ZITADEL release notes for the latest supported version on your branch.
Workaround
- No workaround is documented for this CVE. Upgrading to a patched version is the recommended solution.
Exploitation
- No known exploitation as of the latest sources reviewed.
- CISA SSVC: Exploitation none, Automatable no.
- No public proof of concept found in the sources reviewed (not verified on GitHub).
- EPSS 0.00321.
Our recommendation
- Identify all ZITADEL instances (lockfiles, container images, Helm values) and check whether hosted Login V1 or V2 is exposed to the internet.
- Upgrade to 3.4.14 or 4.16.2 at minimum, or preferably to the newest supported release on your branch.
- Until patched, review audit logs for newly registered passkeys or authenticators, especially on accounts you did not expect to change.
- Restrict access to admin consoles and monitor for unexpected sign-ins.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
ZITADEL 3.x before 3.4.14 and 4.x before 4.16.2 contains an authentication bypass in the hosted Login V1 and Login V2 UIs that accepts passkey or other authenticator enrollment on identify-only login sessions, before any primary factor is verified. Unauthenticated attackers knowing only a victim's login name can register an attacker-controlled authenticator and log in as that user, bypassing existing passwords and MFA.
