Google Chrome: Incorrect authorization in FileSystem allows sandbox escape on Windows

CVE-2026-103626Critical 9.6

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

Google Chrome on Windows contains an incorrect authorization flaw in the FileSystem component (CWE-863). A remote attacker who lures a user to a crafted HTML page may be able to execute arbitrary code outside the browser sandbox. The attack requires user interaction, typically by social engineering or phishing.

Affected

  • Google Chrome on Windows prior to 154.0.8037.97
  • Exact affected version range per the CVE record: 154.0.8037.97 (record wording is inconsistent; verify against Chrome release notes)

Fixed in

  • Google Chrome 154.0.8037.97 or later (vendor-stated fix for Windows)
  • Note: a Debian record lists 155.0.8059.39 as fixed; the conflict is unresolved, so the latest stable Chrome is the target.

Workaround

  • No workaround documented by the vendor. Update Chrome.

Exploitation

  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, not automatable, total technical impact.
  • Not listed in CISA KEV.
  • EPSS scores of about 0.21% to 0.33%.
  • No public proof of concept found; this does not prove that none exists.

Our recommendation

  • Check the Chrome version on all Windows endpoints (chrome://settings/help) and ensure it is the latest stable release.
  • Verify that managed update policies do not block Chrome updates.
  • Find and update offline or rarely used devices.
  • Make sure users are trained to recognise phishing and malicious links.
  • Check Chrome on Linux and macOS as well.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
