Juniper Session Smart Router: OS command injection in AccessManager audit rules
Summary
An OS command injection flaw (CWE-78) in the AccessManager component of Juniper Session Smart Router and Session Smart Conductor allows arbitrary file deletion and arbitrary command execution when an audit rule is deleted. An attacker needs a valid low-privileged account on the device or management platform, and the CVSS score is 8.8 (high). Juniper's SIRT is not aware of any malicious exploitation.
Affected
- Session Smart Router: versions before 7.0.5, 7.1.0 to before 7.1.7, and 7.2.0 to before 7.2.3
- Session Smart Conductor: versions before 7.0.5, 7.1.0 to before 7.1.7, and 7.2.0 to before 7.2.3
- Exact build numbers within each branch: verify in JSA112183
Fixed in
- Session Smart Router and Session Smart Conductor 7.0.5 and later
- Session Smart Router and Session Smart Conductor 7.1.7 and later
- Session Smart Router and Session Smart Conductor 7.2.3 and later
Workaround
- No known workarounds according to Juniper.
- Interim measure (own assessment, not a Juniper recommendation): restrict access to the management interfaces until the update is applied.
Exploitation
- No known malicious exploitation according to Juniper SIRT.
- Not listed in CISA KEV.
- No known public proof-of-concept exploits at publication.
- EPSS: 1.18 % (percentile 68).
Our recommendation
- Inventory all Session Smart Router and Session Smart Conductor deployments and confirm their versions.
- Upgrade to 7.0.5, 7.1.7 or 7.2.3 (or later) as described in JSA112183.
- Prioritise devices reachable from outside the network and devices with shared administrator accounts.
- Restrict management access to trusted administrators until patching is complete.
- Patch in the same maintenance window as the other CVEs in JSA112183, some of which are rated 9.8 and need no login.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
