Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved: Denial of service via malformed EVPN SRv6 route
Summary
Juniper Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved are affected by a flaw in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) that involves improper validation of a quantity in input. A configured EVPN signaling peer can send a malformed SRv6 structure in an EVPN route update and crash rpd. The result is a denial of service that disrupts routing adjacencies. The attack requires a configured EVPN signaling peer and only affects devices where the listed EVPN/SRv6 settings are enabled.
Affected
- Junos OS 23.4 to before 23.4R2-S8.13
- Junos OS 24.2 to before 24.2R2-S5.5
- Junos OS 24.4 to before 24.4R2-S5
- Junos OS 25.2 to before 25.2R2-S2
- Junos OS 25.4 to before 25.4R1-S3
- Junos OS 26.2 to before 26.2R1-S2
- Junos OS Evolved 23.4 to before 23.4R2-S8.11-EVO
- Junos OS Evolved 24.2 to before 24.2R2-S5.6-EVO
- Junos OS Evolved 24.4 to before 24.4R2-S5-EVO
- Junos OS Evolved 25.2 to before 25.2R2-S2-EVO
- Junos OS Evolved 25.4 to before 25.4R1-S3-EVO
- Junos OS Evolved 26.2 to before 26.2R1-S2-EVO
- Junos OS Evolved 23.4X100 to before 26.2R1-S2-EVO, 25.2X100 to before 25.2X100-D35-EVO, 25.4X300 to before 25.4X300-D40-EVO
- Default configuration: not affected. Affected only when EVPN with SRv6 or Prefix-SID signaling is configured (for example protocols bgp family evpn signaling accept-srv6-service or accept-prefix-sid, and EVPN SRv6 encapsulation or ESI interfaces in routing instances).
Fixed in
- Junos OS: 23.4R2-S8.13, 24.2R2-S5.5, 24.4R2-S5, 25.2R2-S2, 25.4R1-S3, 25.4R2, 26.2R1-S2, 26.2R2, 26.4R1, and all subsequent releases
- Junos OS Evolved: 23.4R2-S8.11-EVO, 24.2R2-S5.6-EVO, 24.4R2-S5-EVO, 25.2R2-S2-EVO, 25.2X100-D35-EVO, 25.4R1-S3-EVO, 25.4R2-EVO, 25.4X300-D40-EVO, 26.2R1-S2-EVO, 26.2R2-EVO, 26.4R1-EVO, and all subsequent releases
- Note: Respins have been released for Junos OS 23.4 and 24.2 and Junos OS Evolved 23.4-EVO and 24.2-EVO; earlier builds of these releases have been rebuilt.
Workaround
Unknown. The vendor states that there are no known workarounds for this issue.
Exploitation
- Juniper SIRT is not aware of any malicious exploitation of this vulnerability.
- CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation none, automatable yes, technical impact partial.
- Discovery: internal.
Our recommendation
- Identify Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved devices and check whether EVPN with SRv6 or Prefix-SID signaling is configured.
- Update affected devices to the fixed releases listed in Juniper advisory JSA112187.
- Until patching, review configured EVPN signaling peers and limit them to trusted neighbours.
- Monitor for unexpected rpd restarts and crash files, and check routing adjacency stability after changes.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
An Improper Validation of Specified Quantity in Input vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos Evolved platforms allows a configured EVPN signaling peer to cause an rpd crash via a malformed SRv6 structure carried in an EVPN route update. The result is a denial of service affecting routing adjacencies.
