Junos OS SRX Series: Stack-based buffer overflow in iked VPN daemon
Summary
Junos OS on Juniper SRX Series devices contains a stack-based buffer overflow (CWE-121) in the iked IKE key-management daemon. An authenticated remote-access VPN client can exploit it via the VPN authentication and JIMS identity-publishing path to execute code with root privileges or cause a denial of service. The issue applies only when JIMS identity publishing is enabled. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 8.7 (High).

Workaround
Unknown. The CNA record states there are no known workarounds.
- Limit which users and networks can reach the remote-access VPN service.
- Review whether JIMS identity publishing is required.
Exploitation
- Juniper SIRT is not aware of any malicious exploitation of this vulnerability.
- CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.
Our recommendation
- Inventory all SRX devices and compare their Junos OS versions with the fixed releases in JSA112186.
- Check whether remote-access VPN with JIMS identity publishing is configured.
- Upgrade affected devices to a fixed release, prioritising internet-facing systems.
- Review VPN accounts while the patch is pending: remove stale accounts and enforce MFA where supported.
- Review the other SRX issues in the same advisory JSA112186.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
