Kiteworks Email Protection Gateway: Improper authentication in administrative service
Summary
An administrative service in Kiteworks Email Protection Gateway does not consistently enforce administrator authentication, so the password check can be bypassed. A remote, unauthenticated attacker who references a valid administrator account could create, modify or delete internal users and managed domains and change security-feature settings. Deleting a managed domain also removes its user accounts and could lock administrators out of the gateway.
Affected
- Kiteworks Email Protection Gateway versions before 9.5.0
Fixed in
- Fixed in 9.5.0 (vendor advisory GHSA-wwv8-qhqg-4q76)
- Vendor also lists later fixes in 9.5.1; the newest vendor release should be used
Workaround
Unknown. The vendor advisory describes no workaround; patching is the stated remedy.
Exploitation
- No confirmed exploitation of this CVE reported at the time of research
- No public proof of concept known
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable yes, technical impact partial
Our recommendation
- Confirm the installed EPG version; anything below 9.5.0 is affected
- Upgrade to the newest vendor release, including the 9.5.1 batch
- Remove or restrict internet access to the EPG administrative and web interfaces
- Review admin users, managed domains and security settings for unexpected changes
- Back up the configuration before upgrading
- Treat as urgent if the admin interface is reachable from untrusted networks (CVSS 9.1, CWE-287)
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
Improper authentication in a Kiteworks Email Protection Gateway administrative service. An administrative service in Kiteworks Email Protection Gateway did not consistently enforce administrator authentication, so the required password check could be bypassed. An attacker who referenced a valid administrator account could potentially create, modify, or delete internal users and managed domains and change their security-feature configuration without authenticating; deleting a managed domain also removes its user accounts and could lock administrators out of the gateway.
