Junos OS: Reachable assertion in routing daemon via BGP-LS
Summary
A reachable assertion in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) of Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved can be triggered by an attacker with access to a configured BGP-LS peer. Crafted BGP-LS Link NLRI advertisements crash the rpd. The issue occurs when BGP-LS traffic engineering is enabled. The impact is denial of service; the CNA vector shows no confidentiality or integrity impact.
Affected
- Junos OS: 24.4 to before 24.4R2-S5; 25.2 to before 25.2R2-S2; 25.4 to before 25.4R1-S3; 26.2 to before 26.2R1-S2 (default configuration unaffected)
- Junos OS Evolved: 24.4 to before 24.4R2-S5-EVO; 25.2 to before 25.2R2-S2-EVO; 25.4 to before 25.4R1-S3-EVO; 26.2 to before 26.2R1-S2-EVO; 25.2X100 to before 25.2X100-D35-EVO; 25.4X300 to before 25.4X300-D40-EVO
- Releases before 24.4 are not listed in the CNA record: Unknown.
- Required configuration: protocols bgp family traffic-engineering unicast
Fixed in
- Junos OS: 24.4R2-S5, 25.2R2-S2, 25.4R1-S3, 25.4R2, 26.2R1-S2, 26.2R2, 26.4R1 and all subsequent releases
- Junos OS Evolved: 24.4R2-S5-EVO, 25.2R2-S2-EVO, 25.2X100-D35-EVO, 25.4R1-S3-EVO, 25.4R2-EVO, 25.4X300-D40-EVO, 26.2R1-S2-EVO, 26.2R2-EVO, 26.4R1-EVO and all subsequent releases
- Verify the fixed release for your platform in JSA112187.
Workaround
There are no known workarounds for this issue.
Exploitation
- Juniper SIRT is not aware of any malicious exploitation.
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable yes, technical impact partial.
- No public proof of concept found in the sources reviewed.
Our recommendation
- Check whether BGP-LS traffic engineering is configured (protocols bgp family traffic-engineering unicast).
- If it is not needed, disable it.
- If it is needed, restrict BGP-LS sessions to known, trusted peers.
- Patch affected devices to a fixed release in the next maintenance window, using the table in JSA112187.
- Monitor rpd crashes and BGP-LS session resets.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
A Reachable Assertion vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved allows an attacker with access to a configured BGP-LS peer to cause an rpd crash via a crafted BGP-LS Link NLRI advertisements.
