WSO2 products: Remote code execution via JDBC user store configuration

CVE-2024-4457Critical 9.1

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

Several WSO2 products built on the Carbon kernel, including Identity Server, API Manager and Enterprise Integrator, do not properly validate input in the configuration of JDBC user stores. An attacker who can supply crafted input through the Management Console can execute arbitrary code on the server with the privileges of the WSO2 product, which can lead to full system compromise. The CVE data gives a CVSS score of 9.1 (critical) without authentication, but the vendor advisory could not be opened for verification, so its own rating and the required privileges should be checked.

Workaround

Unknown. No vendor-confirmed interim workaround was found. The vendor advisory recommends migrating to an unaffected version.

Exploitation

  • No active exploitation known at the time of writing.
  • CISA SSVC assessment: Exploitation none, automatable yes, technical impact total.
  • No public proof of concept found in primary sources.

Our recommendation

  • Check which WSO2 products and versions are in use and compare them with the fixed versions above.
  • Patch in the next maintenance window, or sooner if the Management Console is exposed.
  • Restrict access to the Management Console to trusted administration networks and do not expose it to the internet.
  • Review administrator accounts: enforce MFA, use strong passwords and apply least privilege.
  • Monitor the console and logs for unusual changes to user store configuration.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Research sources

Researched and written up in English and German by an AI (Claude by Anthropic) based on NVD, CISA, EPSS and the sources listed. The vendor information is authoritative. Researched on 31 Oct 2026, 06:22.

Original description (NVD)

The Management Console fails to properly validate input related to the configuration of JDBC user stores. This weakness allows an attacker to supply specially crafted input that can lead to the execution of arbitrary code on the affected server. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability enables an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the server with the privileges of the WSO2 product. This could lead to a full compromise of the system.
