Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based): Remote code execution via type confusion

CVE-2026-85898High 8.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

A type confusion flaw (CWE-843) in Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to execute code. The attacker must host a specially crafted web page and get a user to visit it with an affected Edge version. Successful exploitation could allow code execution within the browser renderer process, and MSRC does not state whether a sandbox escape is also required.

Affected

  • Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) from 1.0.0.0 before 154.0.4258.48 (per the official CVE record)

Fixed in

  • Microsoft Edge 154.0.4258.48 or later (build listed by third-party sources; verify against the MSRC advisory before using it in patch rules)

Workaround

Unknown.

Exploitation

  • Not known to be exploited in the wild (OffSeq; not listed in CISA KEV at the time of research)
  • No public exploit code found (ThehackerWire)
  • CISA SSVC: Exploitation none, Automatable no, Technical Impact total

Our recommendation

  • Update Microsoft Edge to the fixed build on all Windows endpoints, using auto-update, Intune, WSUS or another update management tool.
  • Check the installed Edge version on all devices, including rarely restarted laptops, and confirm the fixed build in the MSRC advisory first.
  • Remind staff to avoid untrusted links and websites until the update is installed.
  • Monitor for unusual browser crashes or unexpected code execution on endpoints.
