Google Chrome: Use after free in FileSystem allows code execution in sandbox

CVE-2026-76028High 8.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

Google Chrome prior to 156.0.8078.79 contains a use-after-free vulnerability in the FileSystem component (CWE-416). A remote attacker can execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox by luring a user to a crafted HTML page. Exploitation requires user interaction, such as visiting the page, and the impact is limited to the sandbox unless it is chained with a sandbox escape.

Affected

  • Google Chrome prior to 156.0.8078.79 (Windows, macOS, Linux)
  • Android and iOS: not confirmed by the vendor advisory

Fixed in

  • Google Chrome 156.0.8078.79 (Windows, Linux) and 156.0.8078.79/.80 (Windows, macOS), Stable and Extended Stable channels, released 29 October 2026
  • Android: unverified, check the Play Store

Workaround

  • Unknown. No vendor-recommended mitigation beyond patching.

Exploitation

  • Google has not reported exploitation. The CVE is not listed in CISA KEV at the time of research.
  • No public proof-of-concept found.
  • EPSS: 0.2 % (percentile 10).

Our recommendation

  • Check the installed Chrome version (chrome://settings/help) and confirm 156.0.8078.79 or later.
  • Deploy the update via your management tooling and force a browser restart.
  • Check that Chrome is not pinned to older builds by policy.
  • Check Android devices and other Chromium-based browsers separately.
  • Monitor CISA KEV for changes in exploitation status.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
