Filmax WordPress theme: PHP Object Injection vulnerability
Summary
The Filmax WordPress theme up to and including version 1.1.11 contains a PHP Object Injection vulnerability (CWE-502) that can be exploited without authentication. An remote attacker can send crafted input to manipulate how the site processes serialized data, which may lead to harmful actions on the server. Whether this allows code execution depends on whether a usable gadget chain exists in the installed WordPress environment.
Affected
- Filmax WordPress theme, versions up to and including 1.1.11
- Required privilege: none (unauthenticated)
- CVSS 3.1: 9.8 (CRITICAL) according to the CNA; VulDB rates it 7.3
Fixed in
Unknown. No fixed version or vendor advisory was found as of the research date.
Workaround
- Patchstack reports a mitigation rule that blocks attacks until an official patch is available; this requires a Patchstack subscription.
- Restrict access to affected sites where possible and add WAF protection.
- Consider temporarily disabling or replacing the theme; a theme replacement is the only fully effective step while no patch exists.
Exploitation
- No public proof of concept or confirmed in-the-wild exploitation was found.
- VulDB states that no exploit exists.
- Not listed in CISA KEV; no EPSS score published yet.
- Patchstack states that exploitation is expected and that similar flaws are used in mass-exploit campaigns.
Our recommendation
- Inventory all WordPress sites for the Filmax theme and its version.
- Where version 1.1.11 or earlier is installed, plan a replacement theme as no fix is available.
- Until then, restrict access, enable WAF or virtual patching, and monitor logs for suspicious requests.
- Re-check the vendor and Patchstack pages regularly for a fixed release.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
