ThemeREX Nuts theme: PHP Object Injection without authentication
Summary
The Nuts WordPress theme up to and including version 1.12 contains a PHP Object Injection flaw (CWE-502) that can be triggered without authentication over the network. An attacker who sends a crafted request can manipulate how the site processes data, which may lead to harmful actions on the server, including reading or changing data and disrupting the site. The theme is sold for gambling and casino websites; the vendor has not published a fix, and the vendor-to-product match is based on third-party data.
Affected
- Nuts WordPress theme, versions up to and including 1.12
- Vendor and product match based on the Patchstack advisory and the ThemeForest listing; not confirmed by a vendor statement
Fixed in
Unknown.
- No official patch available according to Patchstack
- No fixed version identified
Workaround
- Deactivate or replace the Nuts theme; no patch exists
- Move the site to a non-affected theme
- Optionally place a web application firewall with virtual patching in front of the site; its coverage of this issue is unverified
- Restrict access to the WordPress administration where possible
Exploitation
- Exploited in the wild: not confirmed
- Not listed in CISA KEV (per mirrored NVD data)
- Patchstack expects exploitation, but this is a prediction
- EPSS: not yet published
- No public proof of concept found; VulDB states no exploit is available
Our recommendation
- Check all WordPress sites for the Nuts theme, including staging sites and child themes
- If found, deactivate or replace it, since no patch exists
- If the site must stay online temporarily, use a web application firewall and review logs for suspicious requests
- Check for a vendor advisory, KEV listing or EPSS data, and re-check this entry in one week
- Note that the CVSS score differs between sources (9.8 in NVD, 7.3 in VulDB); use 9.8 for prioritisation
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
