Google Chrome: Memory corruption in GarbageCollection allows code execution

CVE-2026-119263Critical 9.6

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

Google Chrome versions before 156.0.8078.79 contain a memory corruption flaw in the GarbageCollection component (CWE-119). A remote attacker can potentially execute arbitrary code outside the browser sandbox by luring a user to a crafted HTML page. The attack needs no authentication, but the victim must visit the page, and Chrome rates the issue High (the NVD score of 9.6 is not yet confirmed). Any SME workstation running an affected Chrome build is exposed.

Affected

  • Google Chrome desktop builds before 156.0.8078.79 (per the CVE description)

Fixed in

  • Linux: 156.0.8078.79
  • Windows and macOS: 156.0.8078.79/.80 (per the Chrome Releases post of 29 October 2026)
  • Android and iOS: Unknown.
  • Chromium-based products such as Edge, Brave and Opera: Unknown.

Workaround

Unknown. No workaround is documented; apply the update.

Exploitation

  • No evidence of exploitation in the wild on record (OffSeq Threat Radar, as of 30 October 2026).
  • Not listed in CISA KEV.
  • No public exploit code indexed in Metasploit or Exploit-DB.
  • The vendor post excerpt did not state whether the bug is exploited in the wild.

Our recommendation

  • Update Chrome to 156.0.8078.79 or later (156.0.8078.79/.80 on Windows and macOS) on all desktops, including Linux and macOS.
  • Verify the version centrally on managed devices, because Chrome applies updates only after a relaunch.
  • Check the browser version via Menu > Help > About Google Chrome on unmanaged devices.
  • Update Edge, Brave, Opera or other Chromium-based browsers once vendors publish fixes.
  • Prioritise workstations that browse untrusted or internet-facing sites.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
