Google Chrome: Use-after-free in Modularization component
Summary
Google Chrome before 156.0.8078.73 contains a use-after-free flaw in the Modularization component (CVSS 8.8, CWE-416). A remote attacker can execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox by luring a user to a crafted HTML page. No user privileges are required, but the victim must open the page, so every Chrome installation with web access is exposed.
Affected
- Google Chrome prior to 156.0.8078.73 (desktop, per NVD/CNA record)
- Ubuntu chromium-browser package: not affected (wrapper around the Chromium snap)
Fixed in
- Google Chrome 156.0.8078.73 or later, released 27 October 2026 (per CVE record and secondary reports)
- Install the newest stable build. A third-party page references 156.0.8078.79 for another Chrome CVE; whether it also covers this CVE is unknown.
Workaround
Unknown. No vendor workaround is documented. Updating is the fix.
Exploitation
- No evidence of exploitation in the wild as of the latest data found.
- Not listed in CISA KEV as of the latest tracker entry found.
- No public proof-of-concept found as of the data date.
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.
Our recommendation
- Update Google Chrome to 156.0.8078.73 or later on all endpoints, ideally the newest stable build.
- Verify the installed version on each device (chrome://settings/help) and check managed fleets for blocked or lagging updates.
- Ensure automatic updates are enabled and restart the browser after updating.
- Prioritise staff who browse untrusted links or open email attachments.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
