Google Chrome: Memory corruption in Skia graphics library

CVE-2026-118340Critical 9.6

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

A memory corruption flaw in Skia, the graphics rendering library of Google Chrome, may allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code outside the browser sandbox. Exploitation requires that a user loads a crafted HTML page, so user interaction is needed, but no authentication is required. Google fixed the flaw in the Stable channel update of 27 October 2026. No exploitation has been reported so far.

Affected

  • Google Chrome prior to 156.0.8078.73 (NVD description)
  • Windows and macOS: builds before 156.0.8078.73/.74 (secondary reports)
  • Linux: builds before 156.0.8078.73 (secondary reports)
  • Note: the CVE record's version range is inconsistent (156.0.8078.73 to < 156.0.8078.73); the NVD description is used here.

Fixed in

  • Google Chrome 156.0.8078.73 or later (Windows and macOS: 156.0.8078.73/.74; Linux: 156.0.8078.73)
  • Fixed in Google's Stable channel update of 27 October 2026, as reported by secondary sources; the vendor advisory was not independently verified for version details.

Workaround

  • Unknown. No workaround is documented; applying the Google update is the fix.
  • Chrome normally updates in the background, but the rollout is staged over several days or weeks, so the installed version must be verified.

Exploitation

  • No exploitation in the wild reported so far.
  • No public proof-of-concept or exploit code found as of 26 October 2026.
  • Not listed in the CISA KEV catalog at the time of research.
  • CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation none, not automatable, total technical impact.

Our recommendation

  • Update Google Chrome to 156.0.8078.73 or later on all workstations and servers with Chrome installed.
  • Enforce automatic updates via policy and report the installed Chrome version across all endpoints.
  • Check that other Chromium-based browsers (for example Edge or Brave) are updated by their vendors as well.
  • Recheck the CISA KEV catalog and Chrome release notes, since the CVE was published only recently.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
