Google Chrome: Use-after-free in ImageCapture allows sandboxed code execution
Summary
Google Chrome before 156.0.8078.73 contains a use-after-free flaw (CWE-416) in the ImageCapture API. A remote attacker can use a crafted HTML page to execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox. The victim must visit the malicious page, and no authentication is needed. Full system compromise would normally also require a sandbox escape, which is not part of this CVE.
Affected
- Google Chrome versions before 156.0.8078.73 (per the CVE description).
- The version range in the official CNA record is internally inconsistent. VulDB lists the affected range up to 156.0.8078.47; this was not verified against the vendor.
Fixed in
- Google Chrome 156.0.8078.73 or later (Windows, macOS and Linux). Build numbers taken from secondary sources; verify on the vendor advisory.
Workaround
Unknown. No vendor-documented mitigation was found. Updating is the fix.
Exploitation
- Not known to be exploited in the wild (OffSeq radar, third-party data).
- Not listed in CISA KEV according to a third-party tracker; the KEV catalogue was not checked directly.
- No public proof of concept found; this does not rule one out.
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.
- EPSS: 0.26 %.
Our recommendation
- Update Google Chrome to 156.0.8078.73 or later on all managed endpoints.
- Verify the installed build on each machine.
- Check that automatic updates are active and that browser restarts are not postponed indefinitely.
- Prioritise workstations where users browse untrusted websites.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
