Google Chrome: Use after free in Transactions Platform allows sandbox code execution
Summary
Google Chrome before 156.0.8078.47 contains a use-after-free flaw in the Transactions Platform component. A remote attacker can use a crafted HTML page to execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox. The attack requires that a user visits the malicious page; no authentication is needed.
Affected
- Google Chrome for Windows, macOS and Linux prior to 156.0.8078.47
- Chromium-based products that consume the Chromium fix (exact ranges unverified)
- The NVD-derived affected range is inconsistent with the CVE text; the CVE text is used here
Fixed in
- Google Chrome 156.0.8078.47 or later (Linux 156.0.8078.47; Windows and Mac 156.0.8078.47 or 156.0.8078.48 per secondary source, to be confirmed against the vendor post)
- Newer Stable builds (for example 156.0.8078.79 or later) are also available and should be preferred
- Linux distribution package versions: Unknown.
Workaround
- None. Applying the vendor update is the remedy. No mitigation is documented.
Exploitation
- No evidence of exploitation in the wild found; not listed in CISA KEV according to one source.
- No public proof of concept found. The linked Chromium bug could not be checked for access status.
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.
Our recommendation
- Update all Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers on endpoints to 156.0.8078.47 or later, preferably the current Stable build, as a priority.
- Verify the installed version on all workstations and enforce automatic updates.
- Check Linux distribution advisories for the Chromium package, and note that Ubuntu ships Chromium as a Snap.
- Monitor vendor advisories for any new exploitation reports.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
