Google Chrome: Use after free in ReadingMode

CVE-2026-113274High 8.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

A use-after-free flaw in the ReadingMode feature of Google Chrome allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox. The attacker needs to lure a user into opening a crafted HTML page. Chromium rates the bug Low, and the CNA text describes impact limited to the sandbox, so full system compromise would likely require a second vulnerability.

Affected

  • Google Chrome prior to 156.0.8078.47 (desktop)
  • Chromium-based browsers that include the vulnerable code, such as Microsoft Edge, depending on their release
  • Ubuntu chromium-browser (snap) is marked not affected

Fixed in

  • Google Chrome 156.0.8078.47 or later; newer Stable builds are available (for example 156.0.8078.79/.80 per third-party listings)
  • Microsoft Edge 156.0.4314.42 or later (per HKCERT bulletin)
  • Debian chromium updates under DSA 6577-1 and DLA 4853-1 (fixed versions unverified)

Workaround

  • Unknown. No vendor-documented workaround; applying the update is the remedy.

Exploitation

  • No known exploitation in the wild; not listed as KEV according to a third-party aggregator.
  • No public proof-of-concept found.
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.

Our recommendation

  • Update Chrome and Chromium-based Edge on all endpoints to the newest Stable build.
  • Check managed installations for stopped auto-updates and verify the installed version.
  • Monitor for updates from Debian and other Linux distributions for their Chromium packages.
  • Prioritise the update according to the Chromium Low rating and the sandbox-only impact, but do not postpone it, since the CVSS score is 8.8.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
