Google Chrome: Memory corruption in ANGLE graphics component
Summary
Memory corruption in ANGLE, the graphics translation layer of Google Chrome, can be triggered by a crafted HTML page. A remote attacker may be able to execute code inside the browser sandbox. The attack requires no authentication, but a user must visit the malicious page, for example via a link in phishing mail. Chromium rates the issue High, and the CVSS base score is 8.8.
Affected
- Google Chrome desktop builds prior to 156.0.8078.47
- Chromium-based browsers that consume this fix may also be affected (for example Microsoft Edge, see the HKCERT advisory)
Fixed in
- Google Chrome 156.0.8078.47 or later (first fixed desktop build according to secondary sources)
- Newest stable desktop build recommended
- Exact fixed version per platform: confirm against the Chrome Releases stable desktop post, which could not be verified directly
- Debian: DSA 6577-1 and DLA 4853-1 for Chromium
- Ubuntu: chromium-browser deb marked not affected because Chromium is installed as a snap, which must be updated separately
Workaround
- Not needed: a patch is available
- Chrome updates automatically; users can check manually under Settings > About Chrome
- No vendor-recommended interim mitigation is known
Exploitation
- No evidence of exploitation in the wild found
- CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation none, not automatable, total technical impact
- No public proof of concept found
- Status is provisional, as the Chrome 156 release contains many security fixes
Our recommendation
- Verify that all Chrome installations on staff endpoints run 156.0.8078.47 or later, preferably the newest stable build
- Check Chromium-based browsers and Linux snap packages for updates
- Enforce automatic browser updates via central management or policy
- Prioritise unmanaged devices and systems with disabled auto-updates
- Monitor for unusual browser crashes or unexpected downloads
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
