← All vulnerabilities

Summary

A use-after-free vulnerability (CWE-416) in the Loader component of Google Chrome allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox. Exploitation requires the victim to visit a crafted HTML page, for example via phishing or a compromised website. The CVE description does not state a sandbox escape, and Chromium rates the issue Low severity.

Affected

  • Google Chrome prior to 156.0.8078.47 (per CVE description)
  • Chromium-based products that consume the affected code are not confirmed; Ubuntu lists its chromium-browser snap as not affected
  • Microsoft Edge: fixed version listed as 156.0.4314.42 or later (not verified against Microsoft)

Fixed in

  • Google Chrome 156.0.8078.47 or later (latest stable build recommended; newer builds exist)
  • Microsoft Edge 156.0.4314.42 or later (unverified)
  • Debian chromium updates DSA 6577-1 and DLA 4853-1 (contents not verified)

Workaround

  • No workaround needed where a patch is available
  • Where updates are blocked, restrict browsing to trusted sites or use managed browser policies; no vendor-specific workaround is known

Exploitation

  • No evidence of exploitation in the wild found; not verified against CISA KEV
  • No public proof of concept found
  • EPSS 0.00417 for the related Chromium entry (low estimated probability)

Our recommendation

  • Update Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers, including Microsoft Edge, to the latest stable version through normal update channels
  • Verify installed browser versions across the fleet, including unmanaged installations
  • Check that automatic browser updates are not disabled by policy and that browsers are relaunched after updates
  • Monitor for exploitation indicators and review the vendor advisory once accessible

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
