Google Chrome: Use-after-free in ANGLE allows code execution in sandbox
Summary
Google Chrome on Windows contains a use-after-free flaw (CWE-416) in ANGLE, the graphics translation layer. A remote attacker can execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox by luring a user to a crafted HTML page. No login is required, but the user must visit the page. A full compromise would additionally require a sandbox escape. Microsoft Edge, which is Chromium-based, is reported to be affected by the same bug.
Affected
- Google Chrome on Windows prior to 156.0.8078.47 (NVD description)
- Microsoft Edge prior to 156.0.4314.42 (secondary source, not yet confirmed by MSRC)
- Other platforms: unclear. Ubuntu lists its Chromium packages as not affected.
Fixed in
- Google Chrome 156.0.8078.47 or later for Windows (version from secondary sources, verify against Google's advisory)
- Microsoft Edge 156.0.4314.42 or later (secondary source)
Workaround
Unknown. No vendor workaround is documented. Apply the update and restart the browser.
Exploitation
- No active exploitation known at the time of research.
- No public proof of concept found.
- CISA KEV status not checked.
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.
Our recommendation
- Verify that Chrome on Windows runs 156.0.8078.47 or later and that Edge runs 156.0.4314.42 or later.
- Restart the browsers after updating, because an old process may still run.
- Check managed endpoints via update reports or Chrome policies.
- Check the CISA KEV catalog before closing the ticket.
- Reinforce phishing awareness and restrict access to untrusted websites.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
