Google Chrome: Use-after-free in DOM allows code execution in sandbox
Summary
A use-after-free flaw in the DOM component of Google Chrome desktop allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox. The attacker needs a victim to visit a crafted HTML page, so user interaction is required and no login is needed. Chromium rates the flaw Medium and CVSS 3.1 is 8.8; code execution inside the sandbox alone does not normally give full system control.
Affected
- Google Chrome desktop for Linux before 156.0.8078.47 (secondary reports)
- Google Chrome desktop for Windows and macOS before 156.0.8078.47 (some reports cite 156.0.8078.48; the official CVE record lists the version range inconsistently)
- Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) before 156.0.4314.42 (HKCERT)
Fixed in
- Google Chrome 156.0.8078.47 or later (Linux); 156.0.8078.47 or later, preferably 156.0.8078.48 or later (Windows, macOS)
- Microsoft Edge 156.0.4314.42 or later
- Ubuntu: chromium-browser is listed as not affected; check the Chromium snap instead
Workaround
Unknown. No vendor workaround found.
- Restart the browser after updating, as old browser processes may still run.
Exploitation
- No evidence of in-the-wild exploitation found (secondary source only).
- No public proof of concept found.
- CISA KEV status: unknown.
- CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.
Our recommendation
- Update all Chrome and Edge installations to 156.0.8078.47 or later, preferably the latest Chrome 156 stable build.
- Restart browsers after the update.
- Confirm the update status on all managed devices via update reports, including unmanaged devices and long-running sessions.
- Check Chromium-based browsers and the Chromium snap on Ubuntu systems.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
