Google Chrome: Use-after-free in Paint allows code execution in sandbox
Summary
A use-after-free vulnerability (CWE-416) in the Paint component of Google Chrome allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox. The attacker needs the user to load a crafted HTML page, for example via a link or a malicious website, and no authentication is required. Full compromise of the device would normally also require a sandbox escape, for which no evidence was found.
Affected
- Google Chrome prior to 156.0.8078.47 (Windows, macOS, Linux)
- Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) prior to 156.0.4314.42 (secondary source: HKCERT)
Fixed in
- Google Chrome 156.0.8078.47 or later. Build numbers differ by platform (156.0.8078.47 or 156.0.8078.48 in secondary sources).
- Later stable Chrome 156 builds exist; the latest stable build is recommended.
- Microsoft Edge 156.0.4314.42 or later (secondary source).
Workaround
Unknown. No vendor workaround is documented. Restricting browsing to trusted sites reduces exposure until the update is applied, but this is not a vendor recommendation.
Exploitation
- No evidence of exploitation in the wild in the sources checked (Strix snapshot from 20 October 2026: not listed in KEV).
- No public proof of concept found.
- Re-check the CISA KEV catalogue in the coming days.
Our recommendation
- Inventory Chrome and Edge versions on all endpoints, including Linux and macOS.
- Update Chrome to the latest stable build and Edge to 156.0.4314.42 or later as a priority.
- Verify that auto-update is enabled and that devices which were offline or unmanaged are updated.
- Monitor the CISA KEV catalogue and Google release notes for reports of exploitation.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
